Tonight in Rome, the Saudi Music Commission presented the latest stop of the Marvels of Saudi Orchestra world tour with a landmark performance at the Temple of Venus and Rome, Colosseum Archaeological Park. Held under the patronage of His Highness Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud, Minister of Culture, the evening featured Maestro Andrea Bocelli in a celebration of Saudi and Italian artistry.
The performance brought together 32 musicians from the Saudi National Orchestra and Choir alongside 30 musicians from the Fontane di Roma Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Marcello Rota. Together, they delivered a carefully curated program of Saudi, Italian, and international works, blending traditional Saudi compositions with globally recognized pieces in a unified artistic presentation.

The performance also included a selection of Saudi Arabia’s most renowned traditional performing arts, including Ardah Wadi Al-Dawasir, Al-Khatwa, and Yanbaawi, presented by 55 performers, with the participation of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, as part of its ongoing efforts to highlight the diversity of Saudi cultural traditions.
Among the evening’s highlights was a joint artistic performance titled “Al-Hijr and Rome,” a composition that reflects the historical and cultural connections between Saudi Arabia and Italy. Written by Dr. Suleiman Al-Theeb, a Saudi historian and academic specializing in ancient Arabian civilizations, the piece traced a dialogue between two civilizations, drawing on shared histories and cultural exchange across time.
Commenting on the occasion, Paul Pacifico, CEO of the Music Commission, said: “Presenting ‘Marvels of Saudi Orchestra’ at the Venus and Rome, Colosseum Archaeological Park is a landmark moment for Saudi music, and a powerful symbol of cultural dialogue. By bringing Saudi musicians together with renowned Italian artists and the Fontane di Roma Youth Orchestra on one of the world’s most historic stages, we are sharing our musical heritage with new audiences on one hand and building lasting creative partnerships that will shape the future of our music ecosystem, on the other”.

In his remarks, Dr. Mohammed Hasan Alwan, CEO of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, emphasized the significance of this participation, which brought together the historic setting of the venue as a global cultural landmark with the Saudi traditional performing arts as an expression of national identity, presenting Saudi culture in a manner that contributes to cultural exchange.
Maestro Andrea Bocelli expressed his enthusiasm for performing alongside the Saudi National Orchestra and Choir: “Performing against the magnificent backdrop of the Colosseum is always a deeply moving experience, but sharing this stage with the Saudi National Orchestra and Choir made the evening even more meaningful. Music has the power to connect cultures across time and space, and this performance was a beautiful expression of that connection. It was a privilege to be part of a performance that brought together such rich musical traditions in the heart of Rome.”.
Maestro Marcello Rota added “Bringing together the Saudi National Orchestra and Choir with the Orchestra Giovanile Fontane di Roma has been a deeply rewarding artistic experience. As a conductor, what is most striking is both the shared musical understanding and the distinct character each tradition brings. There are clear differences in style and expression, but also strong similarities in discipline, emotion, and musicality. These compositions, whether Saudi or Italian, find a natural dialogue when performed together. In that exchange, the orchestra becomes a single, unified voice while still preserving the richness of its individual parts. That is where the true artistry lies”.
The Rome performance reinforces the role of Marvels of Saudi Orchestra as a platform for international cultural exchange, enabling Saudi artists to engage with global audiences while celebrating and showcasing Saudi musical identity. Through initiatives such as this, the Music Commission continues to support the growth of a dynamic and sustainable music ecosystem within the Kingdom.
