The European Union Delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrated Europe Day. Proposed by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950, Europe Day is dedicated to unity, peace, and a shared commitment to common values. The Schuman Declaration, which has become a guiding principle for ensuring world peace, requires efforts that match the threats it faces. Europe, as we know it today, has been built on concrete achievements that foster genuine solidarity.
In his remarks on the enduring significance of the Schuman Declaration – not only for Europe but for the wider world – His Excellency Ambassador Christophe Farnaud noted that, despite the ambitious efforts of the 1950s, the modern world still faces conflicts and challenges that threaten regional and global stability and prosperity. At the same time, positive transformations are occurring alongside these challenges, influencing the European Union’s response to a shifting international landscape.

“Innovation is accelerating medical breakthroughs, expanding access to knowledge, and opening new economic frontiers. Society is more connected than ever. The real question is whether we shape these changes or are shaped by them. The European Union’s answer is clear – we must act, embrace transformation that empowers progress, and defend our values and interests,” stated H.E. Christophe Farnaud.
The Ambassador emphasized that even in difficult times, increased and improved cooperation is essential: “The strategic partnership between the European Union and Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, is extremely important and has gained exceptional relevance. This partnership is not new; it results from a shared, long-term strategic vision initiated through the EU-Saudi cooperation arrangement signed in 2021, the EU-Gulf Strategic Partnership established in 2022, and the first EU-GCC Summit held in 2024.”

H.E. Christophe Farnaud also emphasized that, in many ways, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 approach mirrors the European Union’s response strategies to current changes by focusing on economic diversification, social progress, and sustainable development. “Today, the European Union is Saudi Arabia’s second-largest trading partner and the largest source of foreign direct investments, with around 2,500 European companies operating in the Kingdom.”
Indeed, the partnership between the European Union and Saudi Arabia reflects a deepening interdependence that transforms dialogue into agreements and business opportunities into reality. As His Excellency Christophe Farnaud noted in his closing remarks, success can be achieved through partnership and by collectively overcoming difficulties, as once proclaimed in the Schuman Declaration.
