What is SMILE?
Established in 2013, SMILE is a non-profit organization operating as part of Alfaisal University’s College of Medicine in Riyadh, that supports cancer patients and their families. SMILE volunteers host different types of events and engagements that aim to educate, inspire, and draw smiles on the faces of cancer fighters.
The SMILE Story
“Smile…you are still alive and have a chance to pray and ask Allah whatever your heart desires and ask for his forgiveness and vent to him your woes…Others wish they were in your shoes. So smile, you’re blessed :)” – Farida This tweet by Farida caught the attention of Dr. Mohammed Al-Sadoon (co-founder of SMILE), who wished to know more about Farida and her story. Farida was a cancer fighter who supported and encouraged other young cancer fighters, despite her own pain and suffering. She drew smiley faces on bandages on their little hands so whenever they looked down they would see a smile. Sadly, Farida died two days after she tweeted that final encouraging message to her followers. In honor of Farida, Dr. Al-Sadoon initiated “SMILE, You’re Blessed” to support cancer patients the way Farida did.
How You Can Help
To date, SMILE has mobilized over 590 volunteers, held 82 events, and drawn more than 2021 smiles on cancer fighters faces. SMILE has also conducted workshops to educate its volunteers and established various research projects in the field of cancer support. Here is how you can help draw more smiles!
- Send positive messages to the cancer fighters and their families and draw beautiful smiles on their faces. SMILE will share the messages on social media and attach it to the cancer fighter’s gifts. - Host a SMILE event at your embassy or organization.
- Sponsor a SMILE project through Alfaisal University.
