What brought you to Riyadh?
My whole family moved to Riyadh from the Eastern Province in 2001.
Can you tell us about your work?
I am a designer and I run Sadu Design, a Saudi brand that makes high quality rugs that resonate with a contemporary style. Our Saudi ethnic line is designed by me, inspired by Arabian textile, symbols and patterns but with a contemporary feel to fit modern spaces. We also have a geometric line that is very sleek and easy to match with any home because it’s made with delicate materials that add a touch of luxury to chic interiors. We also have a special rug collection that I hand-picked from across the world. I chose the name Sadu because I was inspired to integrate Al-Sadu in my designs. AlSadu is the ancient Bedouin tribal craft and it conveys a rich nomadic Arab heritage. Our patterns and symbols are visual narratives of the traditional tribal lifestyle, desert habitat and the weavers’ creative self-expression. I was inspired to create designs that celebrate our past and present them in a way we can timelessly carry into our future.
How long have you lived in the DQ?
Two years.
What were your first impressions of the DQ?
It’s a quiet safe place. A nice hideaway from the busy city streets.
What’s your day like in the DQ? (Kindly walk us through it.)
I wake up in the morning, do an hour of exercise, then start working, and fulfil any obligations that are needed to be done: meetings with clients, answer emails, etc. I do this until lunch time. After that, I stay with my boys and care for them until their bedtime . At night, either I engage myself in small social gathering that are usually at my place or run some errands then see my family afterwards. I have some days too where I just chill by reading, cooking a light meal, or watching documentaries or movies.
What do you like most about the DQ?
The thing I like most about the DQ is how quiet it gets and the ability to ride a bike with friends and have nice walks on the many trails here.
What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t?
A sticker for cars that tells you actually live here without having to be asked every time.
Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh?
King Abdulaziz museum, Aldeera market, and Wadi Hanifa.
Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors?
Know your community in DQ to take in all the benefits that might be right around the corner. Utilize the many walking trials available and if you have kids get them to play in the gardens.
What are you looking forward to in the upcoming season?
Well I love camping in Saudi, and when I travel in winter I look forward to snowboarding!
