Go For Gold

When measuring excellence, “gold” has always been equal to being “first place”. At the Gold Sushi Club, they live up to the name by delivering high quality sushi, a luxurious dining space and a wide range of dishes that deliver on taste and value for money. It’s one club we all should be a part of.

No membership is needed. Just enter through the doors of the Gold Sushi Club located in Rubeen Plaza and you’re in! Originally from Jeddah, this celebrated restaurant has now made its presence felt in the Riyadh food scene. Statuesque Japanese armors will welcome you as you walk through their spacious and elegant surroundings. Take a seat in one of their cozier corners or invite along your colleagues for a relaxed business meeting in one of their larger tables. Looking around, the restaurant pays homage to Japanese culture with its bold red accents, murals made of kaiga, and an arrangement of stacked sake barrels to complete the look.

The menu boasts of a variety of Japanese dishes, from sashimi, sushi, maki, makimono, and other specialties crafted by the “Gold” chefs. We began with an appetizer feast composed of Hamachi, Salmon No Karupatcho, Wagyu Beef Tataki, Gyoza, and Shrimp Wasabi. It was hard to choose a winner from the first course, but from the looks of it, the special sauce of the Salmon No Karaputcho and the buttery bites from the Wagyu Beef Tataki seemed to have captured our taste buds the most.

Our sushi selection then made a grand entrance. It looked more like a sushi ship than a sushi boat to be honest, as it carried probably over fifty slices of their best maki rolls and a handful of delicious sushi. It was an overwhelming yet exciting sight to behold and will compel you to stop for a minute and admire the great work it took in assembling all of it. The Geisha Roll made an immediate impression with its flavorful combination of salmon, shrimp tempura, tobiko, cream cheese and sauce. The Samurai Special also packs a punch with its pairing of fresh salmon and smoked salmon together with avocado and cream cheese. Another recommendation from the brood would be the Hanzo Rolls, which was made of eel, avocado, tobiko and topped with crispy kani.

Shortly after, the sashimi selection made a more subtle appearance, arriving in a delicate arrangement with smoky dry ice for an enchanting effect. It had slices of maguro (tuna), shake (salmon), ika (calamari) and hamachi (yellow tail). All of which were fresh and luscious to the taste.

For the main course, you must not miss their rendition of Black Cod and Miso – the fish was cooked to perfect tenderness and the sauce was distinctly delightful and unforgettable that I was pressing on the chef to reveal the recipe to me. That dish was one gold prize. They also offer an array of other main dishes in their menu such as Seared Wagyu Beef, Tori Katsu, Seafood Teppanyaki, and Chicken Ramen just to name a few.

But what is a complete dining experience without dessert? Their culinary creativity extends to the last course by serving us with Osaka Cheesecake, a light and fluffy pistachio Japanese cheesecake with raspberry sauce; Chocolate Fondant with its classic melted center; and finally, hot matcha green tea poured from a tetsubin – a traditional cast iron kettle used in Japanese tea ceremonies.

Their brand has been previously awarded with the Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor and were once nominated in the Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Middle East and Africa. They are also ISO certified in Food Safety Management. With the Gold Sushi Club’s noteworthy menu, inviting ambiance and attentive service, they are truly an added gem to the list of Japanese restaurants in the city. When it comes to authentic Japanese cuisine and hospitality, let’s go for the Gold!
