What brought you to Riyadh?

I ventured to Riyadh to accept a teaching position at a private University. After several years of teaching abroad, I found that I truly enjoy the expat life. Moving to Saudi Arabia was the perfect next-move career wise. My personal curiosity in learning about cultures and languages was the nudge I need to make the move. How long have you lived in the DQ? I have lived in Riyadh for 2 years, going on 3.

What were your first impressions of the DQ?

My initial impression of the DQ was, “Great, wide open spaces!” I had heard, from other expats that living quarters and compounds can be quite tight, so, I was pleased to see that the DQ offers places to roam. Aesthetically, the palm trees are a wonderful touch.

What’s your day like in the DQ? (Kindly walk us through it.)

On a typical day, I teach in the morning hours until late afternoon. Once I arrive back to the DQ, I usually enjoy an evening jog on the walking trails, a game of tennis or a social gathering in my apartment. All of my friends know how much I enjoy cooking, so getting people to come for a visit is quite easy.

What do you like most about the DQ?

What I like most about the DQ is my ability to spend time outdoors. There are a variety of places where I can meet friends for socializing, eating or getting exercise. I especially like the green areas and the fountain areas.

What is something you wish the DQ had, but currently doesn’t?

I wish there were a better variety of restaurants inside the DQ, representative of the community. If I had to ask for any upgrades or improvements to the existing features, I would recommend better fees and access at the Sports Facility, for expat females.

Where are your favorite places to visit in Riyadh?

I enjoy visiting traditional Middle Eastern restaurants, malls and the souqs. By far, Bahta Souq is my favorite because it is a vibrant and active part of the city.

Any tips/recommendations/advice for your DQ neighbors?

The one recommendation I have for my DQ neighbors is to be “neighborly.” We should continue to support one another, exchange information and build strong community ties. I would also advise everyone to sign up on www.internations.org to gain access to the many group activities held in Riyadh. This networking site has been invaluable in my making connections with local expats.

What are you looking forward to in the upcoming season?

This upcoming season, I am looking forward to attending yoga classes at Om Zaina, running with Riyadh Road Runners and playing tennis. Lots of tennis! I also really look forward to meeting new residents who enjoy an active lifestyle.
