Diplomacy is an intricate art and a vital tool by which states implement their foreign policies, aiming to protect both collective and individual interests. It facilitates the promotion of political, commercial, cultural, and various other relationships, all while ensuring the maintenance of peaceful interactions across the globe.

Over the years, aside from my public health research, I have had the privilege of conducting numerous discussions that delve into the realms of diplomacy and foreign policy. These conversations have featured insights from diplomats, ambassadors, and heads of mission operating within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and beyond.

Recently, I had a unique opportunity to examine diplomacy from a fresh and invigorating perspective. During the Sultanate of Oman’s National Day celebration, graciously hosted by His Highness Sayyid Faisal bin Turki Al Said, I had the pleasure of engaging with interns currently positioned at EU embassies within the Diplomatic Quarter.

These interns generously shared their motivations for pursuing embassy internships, offering insights into their individual experiences, perceptions of diplomacy, and the invaluable lessons they’ve gleaned during their tenure. Their narratives opened a window into the inspirational continuum that drives young professionals to delve into the world of international relations and diplomacy. They highlighted not only the academic and professional growth achieved through such positions but also the rich cultural tapestry and dynamic socio-economic landscape that Saudi Arabia offers.

For aspiring diplomats and global citizens, the Kingdom emerges as a compelling destination to gain hands-on experience and profound insights into the multi-faceted world of diplomacy. These conversations with the interns underscored the vibrant and evolving nature of diplomatic engagements within Saudi Arabia, reaffirming the nation’s prominence as an essential hub for international dialogue and cooperation.

My primary passion lies in foreign policy, with a particular focus on the MENA region. Having previously studied abroad in Egypt, I felt a strong desire to gain firsthand experience in the world of foreign policy. With a completed dissertation on Saudi foreign policy under the late King Faisal, I decided to take the leap, which allowed me to contribute to the Belgian foreign service and immerse myself in the fascinating, rapidly evolving landscape of Saudi Arabia.

I developed a particular interest in both multilateral and developmental diplomacy due to my experiences in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, a commitment to multilateralism and development will be the guiding force in my career. My main accomplishment has been the leeway granted by the diplomats at the Belgian embassy to discover my own interests within their work. As a result, my primary achievement has been my personal development within the institution, gaining a clearer understanding of what diplomacy means to me and how I might interpret it going forward.

Saudi Arabia is a vibrant and rapidly evolving country in an ever-changing region, offering incredible opportunities to connect with a diverse and interesting group of people, while immersing yourself in Saudi culture. Interning at an embassy serves as a gateway to understanding both the diplomatic world in all its aspects and the local people and customs.

It has always fascinated me how we all live in different worlds. These differences have sparked my interest in exploring and understanding the diverse worlds we experience. I believe that to effectively test theoretical knowledge in diplomacy and foreign policy, you must experience living in a foreign country, immersing yourself in a different environment, and observing firsthand the interactions between your home country and the host nation. This is why I pursued an internship at an embassy in the Middle East. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with trade, culture, and promotion. This role has introduced me to the business side of diplomacy, which is a significant part of our countries’ diplomatic relationships.

Working at an embassy is enjoyable due to its varied tasks, but it also demands a high level of professionalism, as you are representing your country on various occasions. This can range from how you write an email to how you introduce yourself to guests visiting the embassy. This experience not only contributes to my professional achievements but also has a positive impact on me personally.

Be bold and seize opportunities whenever they arise. Speak up and showcase your knowledge, even as an intern. Working closely with an ambassador and diplomats at an embassy can be intimidating, and you might feel like you cannot contribute much – but that is not the reality.
