Step into a culinary journey at Sumosan, a contemporary Japanese restaurant nestled in the prominent venue of Laysen Valley, just around the corner from the Diplomatic Quarter.
Blending the masterful traditions of Japanese preparation and modern culinary innovations, Sumosan’s menu includes a luxurious sashimi and maki selection, along with its signature dishes such as the classic Sumosan surprise lobster salad and the Sando Wagyu Beef – which are available across their menus internationally.
For our visit, we were treated to Sumosan’s starters: crunchy quinoa superfood salad with grilled mango, crispy sushi rice with salmon tartare, and the spicy edamame with homemade chili garlic sauce. The quinoa salad offered a refreshing burst of tropical sweetness, complemented by the delicate balance of textures among its ingredients of quinoa, mango, chickpea and avocado. The artfully prepared salmon tartare was another play on textures with the crunch of the rice contrasted with the minced salmon toppings. Meanwhile, the spicy edamame set a fiery twist on a classic Japanese appetizer.
The tantalizing mocktails menu at Sumosan include names such as “Fizzy Saketini,” “Akai Fuji” and “Love Potion” – the latter two, we tried. They are meticulously designed by glass and are both a pleasure to look at and taste. We fell in love with the fresh lychee juice, elderflower cordial and yuzu juice flavors of the Love Potion; and the sweet blend of fresh orange juice, passion fruit and strawberry purée in the Akai Fuji.
For the main course, a plate of tenderly grilled chicken thighs marinated for 12 hours in Yakitori sauce made its way to our table and into our bellies in one quick swoop. Other recommendations from their international menu are the grilled lobster with creamy spicy sauce, and the 24-hour miso marinated black cod.
To wrap up the evening, we partook in their matcha brownie dessert topped with a scoop of chocolate ice cream; a luscious finale that offers a decadent fusion of rich matcha and melt-in-your-mouth chocolate.
At Sumosan, they aim to elevate your dining journey and immerse you in a unique Japanese culinary experience where each dish is an elegant creation.
