If you’ve been on a great wave of training and eating right for your goals before traveling, you will likely want to continue this while being away. Or, if you travel a lot for work, you may be out of sync with a training routine and want some guidance on staying fit while moving about.
If this is you, then in this article – I got you!
Like Benjamin Franklin said, ‘Failing to prepare is preparing to fail’ and when it comes to training and traveling, this really is the key to maintaining your fitness regime. So here’s a list of ways in which you can prepare to ensure you stay on track.
Does your hotel have a gym? If you can book a hotel with a gym then you’re set as you can complete your training programme in the gym. Sometimes, hotels have fitness classes and personal trainers so you can take part in those if you don’t have a set plan.
Research timetables and availability of trainers in advance so you can fit them into your day and itinerary; this way you’re more likely to commit to it. If you don’t have a training program and are interested in online coaching then I have now launched an Online Training platform where I give personalized programs to you via an app! Bodyweight workout in your room. Remember my ‘No Equipment, No Problem’ article and free bodyweight workout in the DQ Living Summer issue? This is a workout you can do in your hotel room as it requires no equipment. You can also intensify this by bringing small and light equipment with you such as resistance bands and a jump rope.
Explore. As you’re traveling, use the opportunity to explore! You can go for a jog or a walk around the area and discover places. Have a look on Google Maps beforehand to see what’s around you or ask the locals where the secret gems are then decide to jog or walk there and take a look.
Research local gyms and fitness studios. Before you go, research local fitness studios and gyms in the area where you will be staying. Maybe there’s some fitness festivals or events happening too while you’ll be there. Social media and hashtags are a great way to target a particular place. If you have a travel agent they could help you with this too. In the spirit of traveling and exploration, try something new: a new class or style of training you’re curious about.
While travelling, you may need to bring some awareness to what you eat to stay on track with your goals, so have in mind how you balance your meals for the day. For example, if you have a heavy lunch then have a lighter dinner. Or if you have an indulgent day then let the following day be lighter.
Most importantly though, don’t obssess and let this consume you. Holidays and traveling are about rest too so make sure you allow space and time for this.
And remember to:
– PREPARE
– PLAN
– EXECUTE
Have an active and adventurous trip!
