PRACTICAL, RIYADH-SPECIFIC TIPS

Tips to make walking or running safer, more enjoyable & more consistent.

  • Early mornings (5:00–7:00 AM) and evenings after sunset are the best times to be outdoors.
  • Avoid midday hours, especially from May to September, when heat and UV levels are highest.
  • Sunglasses help reduce eye strain and glare, especially on open paths.
  • During summer, even evenings can be hot—slow the pace and shorten sessions if needed.
  • Listen to your body: dizziness, chills, or nausea are signs to stop immediately.
  • Slow your pace in the heat—pace and heart rate matter more than speed.
  • Pre-hydrate before heading out; don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
  • Wear light-colored, breathable clothing and a cap or visor. Modest clothes are still required in public places.
  • Choose well-lit and populated areas, especially in the evenings.
  • Carry your phone and consider using a running watch or tracking app.
  • Use run-walk intervals if you’re new or during hotter months from May to September, when heat and UV levels are highest.
  • Use sunscreen, even for early runs because UV exposure is still high.
  • Invest in good running or walking shoes suited for pavement (most Riyadh paths are hard surfaces).
  • Always carry water, even for short runs or walks.
  • Join local running or walking groups—they boost motivation and safety.
